Every business has invested in quality technological systems to streamline their operations, cut costs and improve service delivery. These systems require a tech support staff to ensure quality connectivity, hardware support and remote support solutions. The support staff will also be required to install, configure, modify and troubleshoot software. If you are fresh from college, there are a number of things that you expect in your first year of work. Some of the experiences are inspiring and enjoyable. However, a few of them will be tough and problematic.
What kind of experience do you need for an entry-level job?
The length of experience that you need for a job differs from one company to another and with the specific skills that they need for the position. For a general tech support assistant in a small company, you may get employment straight from the college. However, many of them need about six months to a year of training. They require you to have a basic IT certificate or diploma from a reputable college. Medium level and big companies have specific skills that they seek in tech support jobs. Some of the common support vacancies include internet connectivity, phone support, remote support representative, and server administrator assistant among other areas. While each of the above systems requires specific skills, you are good to go with a college diploma or degree in IT, software engineering and related IT areas. The length of experience ranges from six months to a year depending on the size of the company and the complexity of the job. Some companies teach tech support on the job. With this opportunity, you are not required to have any technical certification and experience in IT and related areas. However, you should be computer literate and have working knowledge in most of the office software applications.

Your day may be longer than the rest of the members in the company. You may be expected to work for a few hours after the nine-to-five period to ensure that specific hardware, connectivity or software issues are dealt with before the next working day. You will also be required to advise the company on issues to do with hardware, software, repair and purchase of IT equipment. You are the one to tell them when a computer should be written off and when to purchase cartridges for the printer and other computer accessories. You should be comfortable with working on equipment and software for long periods. If you like working with people and moving about, this tech support entry job is not for you.
What stressors can you expect at the workplace?
Here are a number of challenges that you expect in the first year of your career. Troublesome colleagues and customers: Expect to find colleagues that will be calling you even for minor problems that they can handle. Some will be so persistent that they will take some of the time that is meant for other work. Most companies have put together guidelines for items that require the help of the support. Sometimes, you will have to tell them how to do it and not do it yourself. Running behind timelines: There are times when troubleshooting and repair will take more time than you had expected. You may find work piling up faster than you expected. In such a case, it would be good to start with the most urgent tasks and deal with the less urgent ones later. The good thing is the tight periods will not last long as there will times when you have very little to do.
